The 1st Northern Sarawak Patient Blood Management event, held at Hotel Meritz in Miri, Sarawak, on April 25, 2024, featured a comprehensive program aimed at enhancing understanding and implementation of National Patient Blood Management Guidelines. The morning sessions covered a range of topics including updates on haemostasis, the critical role of Massive Transfusion Protocol (MTP) in managing bleeding, and strategies for Patient Blood Management (PBM) in surgical patients. Key pillars of PBM were discussed, such as establishing anaemia clinics, minimizing blood loss, and optimizing tolerance to anaemia, providing attendees with essential insights into improving patient outcomes through effective blood management strategies.
In the practical sessions held in the evening, participants engaged in hands-on activities focused on transfusion reactions and blood bag management, estimating blood loss, managing overwarfarinization, and administering intravenous iron therapy and erythropoietin. Additionally, techniques like Acute Normovolaemic Haemodilution (ANH) and cell salvage, as well as Point of Care Testing using thromboelastography, were demonstrated, offering attendees valuable skills and knowledge to implement in clinical practice for better patient care and blood management.
